Plot: This is a harsh, chilly, unpleasant, but ultimately interesting entry from the Spanish horror era that is likely the definitive Elizabeth Bathory interpretation, making Hammer's "Countess Dracula" look ridiculous and shallow in comparison; that film is a period costume romance in comparison to BLOOD CASTLE. This is a serious film with no lighthearted moments, and it is a great example of the unbearably suffocating type of period horror suggested by Michael Reeves' CONQUEROR WORM, which uses period horror conventions -- castles, nightgowned beauties, foggy wastes -- to trick the
